JLPT N4 · Elementary
JLPT N4 vocabulary list
The bridge level: more verbs, more kanji, and the point where sentences start joining together.
- Words
- 633
- Example sentences
- 1,899
- Written with kanji
- 526
- Kana only
- 107 (17%)
N4 is less glamorous than N5. The vocabulary here is what turns isolated phrases into connected speech: words for comparing, explaining, planning, and giving reasons.
There's a lot more kanji here but don't fret!
This is also where the same word starts meaning different things in different contexts, so the example sentences start to be more helpful than they did at N5.
What passing looks like: You can read a short email, follow a simple news headline, and explain why you were late.
